YMCA 1st XV 27 - CIYMS 1st XV 13
This was a tremendous result for the YMCA and now gives them six points
from their opening four games and a top four league position.
The strong CIYMS pack had the better of the opening possession and territory, with their back line looking dangerous on the break. It was the home team who opened the scoring when from a scrum on the CI 10 metre line scrum half Darrell Braiden picked up and went on the blind side. He then linked with winger Lee Culbert who raced away who then passed inside to Colin Mitchell who touched down.
Ten minutes later YM had their second score when a long downfield kick by full-back Ryan Brace forced a line out near the CIYMS line. A scrum followed and after the YMCA forwards disrupted the opposition put in, Braiden pounced on the loose heel to score.
The Belfast team came back strongly and their full back reduced the score to 10-6 with two penalties. YM finished the half with their third score, when wing forward Paul Doherty turned over ball on the half way, and centres Kris Dunn and Alan Hoy made ground, before linking with Braiden who put Culbert away for a half time lead of 17-6.
The home team kept up the pressure immediately after the 2nd half re-start and were rewarded with their third score when after a powerful run, centre Kris Dunn was stopped on the CI 22 in midfield. From the maul prop Graham Brown broke away to race over at the posts with Brace adding the extra points.
CIYMS had their only try of the game when their pack drove a lineout with their second row taking a pass metres out to drive over for a converted try.
Brace completed the scoring with a penalty, to give his team a well deserved result. In the centre Dunn made a welcome return with his forceful running while wingers Chris Caldwell and Lee Culbert had good displays in both defence and attack.
Brown continued his superb form in both tight and loose, with player coach Keith Gallick immense at close quarters, and Mitchell working hard throughout.
